Norwegians used a similar song-shout hybrid to make themselves heard (called laling), and forms of yodeling have popped up in Azerbaijani, Turkish and Afghan music (where it’s called Tahrir) and many other cultures. WebThe English word ‘yodel’ comes from the German ‘jodeln’, which means ‘to utter the syllable jo’ (pronounced ‘yo’). The concept of yodelling has been around for a while, but during the 1800s it became a rural Alpine tradition. And it became a regular feature in Swiss, Austrian and Southern German folk songs.
