WebWho discovered Helium? Helium has a very interesting history. It was first observed in 1868 as a yellow line in the spectrum of the sun by Jules Janssen, who thought it was sodium. Norman Lockyer also witnessed this spectra, concluded it was a new element, and named it helios, the greek word for “sun”. The formal discovery of the element was made in 1895 by chemists Sir William Ramsay, Per Teodor Cleve, and Nils Abraham Langlet, who found helium emanating from the uranium ore, cleveite, which is now not regarded as a separate mineral species, but as a variety of uraninite.
